Potty Training Tips and Tricks
- Always keep an eye on your dog when free in the house.
- If you can’t watch your dog at all times put them in a crate or on a “Place” command.
- Stay outside with your dog until they go potty.
- Treat your dog when you see them go potty outside and be extra excited for them.
- Take your dog outside to go potty 10 - 30 minutes after eating or drinking anything.
- Take your dog to go potty immediately after waking from a nap.
- When you catch your dog going on the floor scold/ make a loud noise and take them
- outside immediately.
- Teach your dog to ring a bell or bark to tell you when he needs to go out.
- Keep all water sources outside to encourage your dog to as to go out.
- Keep a potty training journal. When does your dog go outside to potty? When do you
- have to clean up messing in the house?
- Always make sure to clean potty spots with vinegar or enzymatic cleanser to get all the
- smell out of the house.
- Feed your dog on a regular schedule.
- Don't feed your dog less than three hours before bedtime.
- Take away water two hours before bed time.
- If you don’t catch your dog in the act of going potty in the wrong spot do not scold your
- dog.
- If your dog can’t seem to hold their bladder ask your vet about a urinary tract infection.
- Use baby gates to block rooms in the house to keep the dog in sight. Gradually add
- rooms as your dog is successful.
- Take your dog out once an hour, gradually extend the time with success.
